Three Free Crocheting Apps (iPhone)

There are lots of apps on my phone, as I'm sure most of you can relate. I realized the other day, that I have none related to crocheting!  How can that be?  Besides my family, crocheting takes up most of my time, and I have no app for that?  So I went looking....

I usually only look for free apps, unless it comes to specific games or learning tools for my children.   It is the same with patterns.  I will only pay for one if I absolutely can not find a free one, and I'm not able to figure out the pattern on my own.  There are hundreds of patterns out there.  In my years of crocheting, I've only had to pay for a handful of them.

That being said, if you are advanced at this craft, there is money in creating patterns that are not out there yet.  But I digress...

Here are some free apps that I found in the app store for crocheting.

Craftsy

Craftsy Knitting and Crochet Patterns – This is an app that features exactly what it claims, patterns! If you are a crocheter and constantly look up patterns you will know the site Craftsy.com.   The app is pretty much the same as the website.  I can already tell that I will use the app A LOT!  It has a nice browse feature to get your creative juices flowing while looking at a wide variety of fun patterns.  I like to just look through random patterns and it usually helps me come up with my next project.  I had only been looking for a minute and I found a pattern I loved and downloaded it. It was automatically added to my Craftsy library.  The library can be brought up on both the app and the website.

There is another app that just says Craftsy and does not have the word "patterns" in the name.  This is a free app as well but it is comprised of "classes" that you need to pay for.  They are videos that teach many different art forms, including crochet.

** Another big pattern site that has an app as well is Ravelry.com.  This app is not free though, so I am not reviewing it.

Lion Brand - Lion Brand is an actual yarn company.  On their site they sell their yarn, but also have huge library of patterns that are ALL free.  The app is pretty much like the website. I am not a huge fan of the patterns I have seen on there, but there are some nice ones. What I do like is their search feature. You can be very detailed when clicking through the search options. Being vague though, will give a variety of patterns to look through.  The best search function, in my opinion, is the difficulty level on each pattern.  They have them rated on a scale of 1-5 (beginner-experienced).

Red Heart - Red heart, like the other apps I've reviewed, has its own website as well and is another yarn company.  I actually enjoy the website more than the app.  In my opinion, the app is not easy to navigate.  It's all there, but it's not as smooth as I've seen on others. There are more patterns on this site then Lion Brand that appeal to me. Red Heart is my preferred brand of yarn.  They have a wide range of colors, feels, styles, and are very reasonably priced!

That is what I found for the free apps.  In the app store there are "free" Crocheting magazine apps.  These are not actually free though.  It will just download it into your Newstand app and then you have to pay for each issue.  Out of these 3 apps, Craftsy Knitting and Crochet Patterns is my favorite.  It has the best patterns and most user friendly interface.

Do you have a favorite crochet app?
