Crochet Security Blanket pattern

I was asked to make a lovey blanket, about half the size of a regular baby blanket.  She wanted it for her little one to be able to carry around, without tripping over, or so big it dragged all over the ground.

I looked online for one similar to this child's favorite blanket to get some ideas.  While looking at a few different patterns, this is what I came up with.

With I (5.5 mm) hook, ch 80

Row 1:  3 dc in 7th ch from hook, (sk 2 sts, 3 dc in next st) twice, *sk 5 sts, (3 dc in next st, sk 2 sts) twice, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next st for point, (sk 2 sts, 3 dc in next st) twice: repeat from * across, end (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in last st, ch 5, turn.

Row 2:  3 dc in 1st ch 3 sp, (3 dc bet next two 3 dc groups) twice, *sk sp bet next 2 groups, (3 dc bet next 2 groups) twice, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch 3 sp, (3 dc bet next 2 groups) twice; rep from * across, end (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in last ch 5 sp, ch 5, turn.

Repeat round 2 till desired length.

When you do switch colors, do the last chain of the previous rounds ch 5 as the new color.

Edging:  sc around the entire piece.  On the sides, I did 3sc into the dc and 4 sc into the chain space.  On the bottom, I did 7 dc in the ch 5 spaces (sc in each of the other chain stitches), and at the top I did a sc in each st, except for the ch 3 spaces, I did 5sc.

This blanket measures about 19.5" x 29"

If you would like it wider the start with a multiple of 11 + 3.  If you want it longer/shorter just add/decrease the number of rows.

Now, the great thing about this pattern is how versatile it is.  You can use just one color, or many.  You can have a random thickness to each color strip, or uniformed.  My customer wanted two colors, and the same thickness for each color.

This is the Crochet hook and tool set my husband got me for Christmas a few years ago and I love it!  It has 9 ergonomic hooks,  stitch markers, scissors, crochet needle, measuring tape and some other useful items!
