The products that the company Melissa and Doug make are so sturdy that you will only have to buy them once, and then they can be passed down from child to child, and even then to your grandchildren! I personally love them because I don't feel bad about my kids playing with them. There are some toys that just make me cringe (ahem - Ipad). When my children are playing with any of these products, though, I know that they are perfect for them developmentally. I could talk all day about the integrity and durability of these products, and how many different toy options that they have made, but I will just highlight a few of my family's favorites.
1. The See and Spell - This is one of the toys that my oldest received for Christmas when she was young. It has now been passed onto our second and third child. Although the kids may have colored the letters, (which actually is just another way to reinforce letter recognition) the toy itself is still in perfect condition. All three of my children have loved this one. The pictures of words that they can spell are colorful and attract their attention from an early age. As they get a little older, like the age of my preschooler, they get so excited that they are able to spell words with it. Its is a great confidence booster for their academic career and it truly helps them get the beginning concepts of letter to sound recognitions!
2. Floor Puzzles - Melissa and Doug have a large variety of floor puzzles, and we love them all! We currently have 4, that, again, started off being a present to my oldest child. Puzzles do not normally last very long at our house, but even after three kids, we still have all the pieces intact and accounted for, for all 4 puzzles we started with! My kids love these so much that they are very careful to not lose any of the pieces. The pictures on the puzzles are so engaging to them, and they get excited whenever they see new ones out in the stores!
3. Alphabet Nesting Blocks - This is the only Melissa and Doug toy that we've had to replace. Honestly, though, it's not due to the quality of the toy, but rather to my kids who like to destroy things. These are just cardboard boxes, so when my middle child started throwing them around, and sitting on them, they of course needed to be replaced. That being said, it has been the top toy for both my youngest children (we didn't have it when my oldest was their age). There are so many possibilities to this toy that don't immediately meet the eye. First and foremost, the alphabet. With the help of me, or their older siblings, it reinforces the alphabet song by putting the boxes in order. Also, it reinforces bigger and smaller. My middle child used to love to stack these boxes up and sing the song as she was pointing to the letters. My youngest though, enjoys putting them all on the floor in order of biggest to smallest. Both are great ways to play with this toy, and both are reinforcing different learning concepts through play! Win-Win!
4. Shape Sorting Clock - Like I mentioned earlier, my children love the puzzles from the company. The shape sorting clock is another one that they are drawn too. We originally bought the puzzle to help my oldest with telling time. It was a good instructional, hands on, tool that we could use with her. My middle child was able to learn her numbers and shapes with it and now my youngest is learning spacial awareness with figuring out which shape fits in which empty spot.
5. Hopscotch - We recently just got this for our preschooler for Christmas. It's great because it encourages physical development with balance and body control. It also reinforces numbers and following directions. Both my oldest and my youngest like to take turns and play with this, and it's perfect for those yucky weather days when we just cant get outside!
Here's the part you've been waiting for: From now until April 17th, 2017, you can get 20% off any order over $50! I'm always looking for good deals because while it's absolutely worth it, Melissa and Doug items can get a little expensive. With this deal though, it makes these products even more than reasonable.
