Christmas Stockings

I got an order for a pair of Christmas stockings for two little girls.  The customer wanted me to match the size of ones that she had already made for herself and husband.  So I went searching online for options, and together, we decided on this style:

Wal-Mart.com USA, LLC

The customer picked her colors and I was excited to get started on it!  Once I did the toe though, I realized how chunky a stoking this really was (the pattern writer does say it's chunky on the site).  I know my customer was looking for something skinnier, so I started playing around with it.

The green one in this picture is the one I made from original pattern.  IT WAS BIG!! I started playing around and adjusting it a little here and there.  The red one shown is what I came up with.   When I measured, the red one was 8.5 inches wide, which was still a little too big.

So I adjusted some more and came up with a size that was only 7" wide.  Much better!

Here is the difference between the 8.5 inch (right) and 7inch (left) sizes.  They are both 21 inches in length.

**Here are the modifications I did that made this beautiful pattern perfect for my customer's wants.**

A couple of notes to get you started:
- I used a size 4mm H hook
- I used Vanna's Choice yarn
- I stopped turning my work after the solid portion of the toe.  I then just worked in rounds, joining each row.

To get the stocking to be 8.5 inches wide and 21 inches long:
1.  I only increased the stocking so that it was 60 stitches.  I stopped at row 8 and skipped rows 9,10 and 11.
2.  I then did 2 rows of hdc evenly around. (I liked the solid part at little longer)
3.  I did rows 12-17 a total of 4 times.
4.  Heel portion - see that section further down
5.  I did rows 12-17 another 5 times to finish off the top
6.  The cuff I did the same as the example.

To get the stocking to be 7 inches wide and 21 inches long:
1.  I only increased the stocking so that it was 48 stitches.  I stopped at row 6 and skipped rows 7, 8, 9,10 and 11.

Heel
For 8.5" wide
- You will do the same as the pattern listed, but it will only be across 30 stitches.  (1st row ends up coming to 28)
- Continue decreasing until there are 10 st left
- Increase according to the pattern

For 7" wide
- You will do the same as the pattern listed, but it will only be across 24 stitches.  (1st row ends up coming to 22)
- Continue decreasing until there are 8 st left
- Increase according to the pattern

Hook
The pattern suggested doing a lobster cord.  Instead, with 4mm hook, I just chained 36, and did 2 rows of 35 sc.  I folded it in half and then sewed it on the inside of the stocking.

Then you can just pick your preferred method for sewing on the name.

Craftsy

By the way, how pretty and unique are those names "Henrietta and Leonora"!!!
