Free Crochet Pattern: Kermit the Frog

I wanted to make a Kermit the Frog but I just couldn’t find a free pattern out there that suited my needs. Normally I would just free hand it, no problem. The mouth on Kermit is so particular though.

After searching around online for a while I found this great pattern for an Elmo doll. The head and mouth were perfect! Instead of red and a black mouth, I could just switch it to green with a red mouth!

Materials

2.5 mm hook
Red Heart With Love in Lettuce, Holly Berry, Daffodil, White, and Black
Small safety eyes
Crochet sewing needle

Head and Body

Using a 2.5 mm hook and green yarn, I followed the Elmo pattern up until Row 23.
I do not join at each round, instead I continuously crochet in rounds.

Round 24: *sc in next 4, 2sc in next* repeat around, sc in last st (25)
Round 25: sc in each st across (25)
Round 26: *sc in next 4, 2sc in next* repeat around (30)
Round 27: sc in each st around (30)
Round 28: *sc in next 5, 2sc in next* repeat around (35)
Round 29: 2sc in first, sc in next 16, 2sc in next, sc in next 15 (37)
Rounds 30–35: sc in each st around (37)
Round 36: *sc in next 4, sc dec*, sc in last (31)
Round 37: *sc in next 2, sc dec* (25)
Round 38: *sc in next, sc dec*, sc in last (17)
Round 39: *sc in next, sc dec*, sc in next 2 (12)
Round 40: *sc in next, sc dec* (8)
Round 41: sc dec 4 times, tie off the hole.

Note: You’ll be able to stuff the body as you are sewing the mouth onto his head.

Mouth

I copied the Elmo pattern for the mouth as well, except in the first row I started with 3sc instead of 4.

• When you sew the mouth on, slowly add stuffing to the head and body as you go.
• The original pattern suggests using cardstock to form the mouth more, but I was afraid it wouldn’t be able to be washed, so I just played around with the stuffing until it was the way I liked.
• I still wasn’t exactly happy with how the mouth looked, so I sewed the corners together a bit.

Eyes

Make 2 (with white)

Round 1: Magic circle, 6sc
Round 2: *sc in next 2, 2sc in next* repeat (8)
Rounds 3–4: sc in each st around (8)

– Stitch two lines over 3 stitches (1 in the middle) with black. Do it so that the two lines go through the same stitches.
– Place the safety eye in that middle stitch in between the two strands.

Find where you like the eyes on the head and sew them on. They are really small so they really don’t need any stuffing, but you can put some in there if you’d like.

Scarf

With yellow:

Ch 30
*Sl st in first 3 st, ch 6 (and now going down that ch 6), sl st, sc, hdc, dc, tr, skip next chain on the original 30* repeat until there are 7 points.

This will be very twisty so you are going to want to block it. Everyone has their own ways, but I just find a hard surface (usually my granite island) and soak it with water. I put something heavy on it until it flattens out, then let it air dry.

Wrap this around Kermit’s neck and then just stitch the two ends together.

Arms

With green:

Round 1: Magic ring with 5sc
Round 2: 2sc, sc, 2sc, sc, 2sc (8)
Round 3: *sc in next 3, 2sc in next* repeat around (10)
Rounds 4–6: sc in each st around (10)
Round 7: sc dec, sc in next 2, sc dec, sc in next 2, sc dec (7)

Stuff the “ball” part of the hands.

Rounds 8–17: sc in each st around (7)
Sew the top of the arm together, and then sew onto the body where the head and body meet.

Legs

With green:

Round 1: Magic ring with 5sc
Round 2: 2sc in each st around (10)
Round 3: *sc, 2sc in next* repeat around (15)
Round 4: *sc in next 4, 2sc in next* repeat around (18)
Rounds 5–6: sc in each st around (18)
Round 7: *sc in next 4, sc dec* repeat around (15)
Round 8: *sc in next st, sc dec* repeat around (10)
Rounds 9–15: sc in each st around

– Stuff the foot and about halfway up the leg.
– Sew each leg onto the bottom of the body. Sew it in a circle, not folded together like the arms.

Tie off all ends and enjoy your Kermit the Frog doll!!
