Versatile Crochet Borders

When you make an item, you usually need that perfect border to finish it off. When people hear the word border, most think of blankets. But there are so many crochet projects that benefit from a great border beyond just blankets.

There are countless crochet borders out there, including some really cute and creative ones. While novelty borders like elephants or roses work best for blankets, I wanted to focus on borders that are truly versatile. These are my top five go-to crochet borders that I use regularly on all kinds of projects.

In no particular order, here are my favorites!

Ribbed Border

I love the ribbed border because it works on so many projects. On hats it provides stretch while still fitting snug. It works beautifully on bags where you can weave a chain through and create a cinch closure.

The picot stitch is another versatile option. It works beautifully on blankets, wall hangings, and even as teeth on character projects like my shark purse.

This was a newer border for me and I instantly loved it. It uses more yarn, but the texture adds a beautiful finish, especially on blankets.

Crab Stitch

The crab stitch is essentially a single crochet worked in reverse. It creates a clean, sturdy border that finishes off almost any project beautifully.

The shell stitch is a classic that I’ve used since I first started crocheting. It works beautifully on borders and adds charm to projects like Christmas stockings.

There are countless crochet borders out there, but these are my current favorites. Which ones do you reach for most often?
