Home Made Baby Wipes Save You $$$$$

All parents know how expensive babies and children can be, having to buy diapers, wipes, food, toys, etc.  Why not save as much money as you can by making your own baby wipes.  If you use one tub of wipes per week, your family will spend, on average, $123.24 (based on huggies wipes at $2.37 for 64 wipes). Wouldn't you rather pay only $30.81 for the same amount of wipes per year?  Here's an easy way you can make these at home.

Wal-Mart.com USA, LLC

You will need:
  • 1 roll of paper towels (the heavy duty ones work the best but any will do)
  • 4 TBS of baby wash
  • 1 TBS of baby oil
  • 4 cups of water
  • 2 empty baby wipe containers

First, you need to cut the paper towel roll in half.  I usually use a saw to do this, but if you have a spare knife, that will work as well.  Then take a large bowl and mix together 2 cups of water, 1/2 TBS of baby oil,  and 2 TBS of the baby wash.  Then you immerse one half of the paper towels into it and soak up all the liquid.  I  then squeeze it out and start unrolling the towels into one of the empty wipe containers.  Once you get to the middle and end of the roll, you'll have to re-soak the towels in the leftover liquid in the bowl.  Continue till the whole roll is in the container.
Repeat for the second half of towels.

This is the boring math part that I used to get the figures listed above.  If you're interested, go ahead and read, if not, trust me I won't be offended if you skip this part!

$2.37 for 64 wipes (huggies brand)
         2.37/64 = .037 or about $0.04 a wipey
         64 x 52 weeks = 3081 wipes
         $2.37 x 52 weeks = $123.24 for 3081 wipes

2 mega rolls of bounty (120 per roll) = $5.47
         each roll is $2.74
each roll cut in half makes a total of 240 wipes

Johnson's baby oil - $3.84 for 20 oz
Use 1 tablespoon per full roll of paper towels = 40 sets of wipes can be made per bottle.
         $3.84/40 = .096 or $0.10 per set

Johnson's Baby wash = $4.97 for 28 oz
Use 4 tablespoons per roll of paper towels = 14 sets of wipes can be made per bottle.
          $4.97/14 = .355 or $0.35 per set

Paper towels = $2.74
Baby Oil       = $0.10
Baby Wash   = $0.35
_________________
                      = $3.19 for 240 wipes = .0139, or $0.01 per wipe

3081 wipes x $0.01 = $30.81 per year

A difference of $0.03 may not seem like a big difference.  What's $0.03 going to buy you right?  The thing is it adds up.  When you are talking about thousands of wipes a year, you can be saving at least $70 bucks!  For me, that's a lot of yarn that I could be crocheting with.  It could be another night out for your family, or a new toy for your children.
